What are complete and partial dentures?

The removable complete denture, also known as a denture or “plate,” is a suitable treatment option for individuals who have lost all of their teeth. It is characterized as removable because it can be placed and removed by the patient, without being permanently installed in the mouth. The construction of the denture results from the collaboration between a dentist and a dental technician and consists of artificial teeth made of acrylic material, placed on an acrylic base covering the patient’s gums.

The advantages of removable complete dentures include relatively good patient adaptation, providing an aesthetic solution, satisfactory stability, affordable cost, and long durability. However, there are disadvantages, such as reduced retention in cases of significant bone loss. As an alternative solution in such cases, the removable complete denture on implants is suggested.

When there is an absence of several but not all teeth in the mouth, the removable partial denture, also known as a “partial” or “denture,” is the appropriate solution. This denture consists of two parts connected to each other. One part is the metal framework placed internally, while the other is the acrylic portion with the teeth. The partial denture is recommended when there is a loss of some teeth, and the patient desires an economical solution, avoiding the cost of bridges or implants.

Partial dentures are divided into two categories, depending on how they are connected to the existing tee
